Hazleton claims third place at Mt. Valley Course
Barnesville, Pa. - Penn State Hazleton traveled south to Mt. Valley Golf Course, home of PSU Schuylkill, for the second round of Penn State University Athletic Conference competition. The Lions had favorable conditions on Wednesday, but struggled to master the narrow course setup and speed on the back nine, leading to a third place finish amongst the seven team field. Hazleton combined for a score of 338 on the afternoon, four strokes behind Penn State Lehigh Valley and 17 strokes shy of Penn State Wilkes-Barre who earned their second consecutive victory on the season.
Ty Morzilla led the Hazleton squad with a plus four 76 on the day. Morzilla was excellent from tee to green, but was let down once again by the putter. Seven putts on the final two holes of the front nine derailed what was otherwise a great start to the round. Morzilla closed the match with two birdies on the final three holes to finish in a tie for second place individually. Rounding out the Hazleton scores were senior captain Brandon Haydt (Hobbie, Pa.) and senior Gary Hunt (Berwick, Pa.) firing a pair of 87's with sophomore Garrett Madison scoring an 88.
Next Up: The Nittany Lions will look to get back on track next Tuesday, Sept. 22 when they travel to State College, Pa. to take on the Penn State Blue Course in a PSUAC Invitational event.
